| First of all there is no perfect service because
different people see their use of cellular phones in
different ways. What is perfect for one person is not
necessarily right for another.
Factors to consider:
- Is this an “emergency phone” only to be used
if my car breaks down? Most first time users give
this reason for wanting a “cell” phone but is
this the only reason to use it? If it is, consider
minimal minutes but make sure it will work where
you need it.
- Do you need to be reached anywhere you are for
family or business reasons? Obviously you will
want the best coverage in the local area where you
work (and play) and pick the minutes that seem
realistic to more than cover your usage but don’t
go overboard unless you are really dependent on
the phone.
- Do you want to save money on long distance? You
probably can save real money on this, remember
cellular (local area) is much larger than it is on
your landline phone and so your non charged
calling area is bigger. If you use out of state
long distance a lot, make sure your plan includes
this or add long distance from the local area to
the plan.
A little planning (after a number of questions) can
go a long way to making it work for you. It is often
best to buy from someone you know and trust to get the
answers you need.
What are the differences in phones?
For some people any phone will do, but for more
serious users phone features can make life more
workable. Basic phone users can often get a phone for
free with a contract that will fit their needs. Others
want special features like small size or flip models
while other want voice dialing or data transfer. Most
carriers have a variety of phones available for a one
time charge that may make your phone more useable.
Decide this after you have chosen your plan. Also know
that you cannot take a phone (or phone number) from
one service to another, so choose wisely. One other
warning to new cellular users, the first phone is free
or low cost. If you lose it, it will cost you a
surprising amount of money so be careful with the
phone.
